Fabric Interconnects and Extenders: The third generation of Cisco Unified Fabric for the Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS) makes the transition to 40GE and 100GE smooth and cost effective. Â

The following Cisco UCS license can be used to activate different ports and modules on the Cisco UCS servers:Â Â
1- 10GE Port Activation License:Â Each Fabric Interconnect generation has 10GE port licenses which can be purchased.Â
2- 10GE C-series Direct Connect License: These Cisco UCS licenses are used for UCS C-series rack servers connected to UCS Manager via UCSM integration.Â
3- 25GE Port Activation License: These 6400 series Fabric Interconnects licenses perform the same function as the 10GE port licenses but are for 25GE ports.
4- 25GE C-series Direct Connect License: These 6400 series Fabric Interconnects licenses perform the same function as the 10GE C-series Direct Connect Licensing but are for 25GE ports.
5- 40GE Port Activation License: These 6300 series Fabric Interconnects licenses perform the same function as the 10GE port licenses but are for 40GE ports.
6- 40GE C-series Direct Connect License: These 6300 series Fabric Interconnects licenses perform the same function as the 10GE C-series Direct Connect Licensing but are for 40GE ports.
7- 100GE Port Activation License: These 6400 series Fabric Interconnects licenses perform the same function as the 10GE port licenses but are for 100GE ports.
8- UCS Mini (UCS-FI-M-6324) Scalability License: These Cisco UCS licenses are used to license the UCS Mini scalability port (only usable on UCSM version 3.1 and higher).

With Cisco UCS, servers are connected to the Fabric Interconnect, then the Fabric Interconnect is connected to the network switches. The Cisco Fabric Interconnect is ALWAYS deployed in pairs, and each server or blade chassis is connected to both Fabric Interconnects to protect against Fabric Interconnect failure.
