The Cisco Nexus 1000v is a virtual access switch for virtualized networks that work with VMware vSphere. The Cisco Nexus 1000V Switch enhances the use of Layer 4-7 virtual networking services in virtual machine and cloud environments through Cisco vPath architecture services.

Cisco Nexus 1000V Switch for VMware vSphere is available in two different editions. The essential edition which includes all the basic switching features and the advanced edition adds advanced security capabilities and Cisco Virtual Security Gateway for Nexus 1000V Switch to the base functionality of essential edition.

The Nexus 1000v first component is a virtual supervisor module (Virtual supervisor module (VSM)-control plane) that takes care of the centralized command and control and the iOS COI for the entire cisco nexus 1000v switch.

The other piece is what we call the virtual Ethernet module (Virtual Ethernet module (VEM)-data plane) this module exists on each one of the hosts and that handles packet forwarding, enforcing policies and quality of service all of the day-to-day operations of moving traffic but everything is still controlled by the supervisor module.

So to a network administrator this is going to look a lot like a traditional Cisco chassis. you will have one or two supervisor modules that support redundancy and control everything that you would log into using familiar IOS CLI commands or work with your familiar what network management tools.

Also it supports the virtual Ethernet modules that would all look like a line card to a network administrator. The Cisco Nexus 1000v virtual Ethernet module is integrated with vSphere completely.

You can purchase permanent licenses for a fixed number of VEM CPU sockets. Permanent licenses do not expire. The number of licenses is specified in the license file purchased. When you subsequently upgrade to a new software release, all previously installed permanent licenses remain in effect.

Evaluation licenses are valid for 60 days and let you evaluate the Cisco Nexus 1000V before purchasing permanent licenses. By using Overdraft licenses a service disruption can be prevented in the event you exceed the number of permanent or evaluation licenses specified in your license file.
